Belief is a strong thing. What we believe in shapes the way we think, the way we act, the way we behave.
My father tells a story of an evangelist who went to a village to, well, evangelize, and the people there were deathly afraid of going out at night. Why? They said witches flew about in the night. The evangelist scoffed, that there was no such thing as witches. The village people insisted. So one day he got annoyed with them, and that night he hopped on his bicycle, lighted a lamp, and rode around the village, calling out to the witches to show themselves. They didn't. The evangelist told everyone that he stayed up all night and saw no witches.
Now, whether there were witches or not, he wouldn't have seen them. Why? Because he didn't believe in them.
The power of belief is that you can be persuaded about anything, and whether it is truth or lie, it will be real to you because you believe. If you believe you are a failure, you will be. If you believe all rich people are thieves, you will always encounter rich thieves until you become one yourself. If you believe Nigeria can never be better, well, there you go.
Mind over matter. Never have truer words been spoken. There is a man who can run marathons, barefoot and in boxers, in the Arctic. Do you have any idea how cold that place is? It is so cold that viruses and mosquitoes can't survive there. It is so cold that you can freeze if you're wearing three sweaters, three jeans, and a jacket on top. It is so cold, there is ice all year round. This man can run, run o, without shoes and in his boxers, in that cold, on that ice. How?
He tells his body, "It's not as cold as you think it is." In essence, he believes that Arctic cold can't kill him, no matter what, and his body adjusts accordingly. He was tested by some research fellows at a university, and they saw that, whenever he thought like that, his bodily functions adjusted. Heart rate dropped, blood pressure dropped, temperature shifted, everything in him adjusted so that the cold won't kill him. His body was conforming to what he believed.
Imagine if he was born again and spoke in tongues. Nothing would be impossible for him.
What do you believe?
